Elephant At The Beach

This painting was inspired by Planet Earth II.  All parts are painted in Photoshop using my tablet.  No photo textures or photo bashing techniques were used.

Blue Jungle Dog

The Blue Jungle Dog is a very rare breed of hairless dog that is often seen wearing an orange sweatshirt because deep down they're Syracuse fans, but they don't know how to read or write so they don't bother to put that on the sweatshirt.

This drawing started off as a "mouse" like creature, but as I continued to work/draw/paint it slowly morphed into a "dog" or something.  The animation below shows the very rough doodle on paper done with a red color pencil.  The next two frames show how I refined it in Sketchbook Pro (I'm still working with the very first version of this program).  The last frame shows additional work done in Photoshop CS2 (yeah I know that's old also, but sometimes that's how it goes).

Race Horse 11-15-15

The original reference photo for this drawing had a jockey and all of his racing gear (saddle, colors, bridle, etc.) on the horse.  The challenge was to draw only the horse - - I think it came out ok all things considered.

Marker Monday 11-9-15

The rarely seen Eggshell Walker also known as the Orange Billed Crackatory.  Scientist still have no explanation for how the female is able to lay such a disproportionally large egg.

Marker Monday 6-22-15

As an admirer of both the Jurassic Park franchise and James Gurney's dinosaur paintings, I thought it was time to shed some light on a lessor known dinosaur family and time period.  After extensive research and field work I bring you my rendering of the Doufasaurus from the Spasazoic Era.

Another colorful bird that happen to drop by the house long enough for me to work up this Marker Monday drawing.

Dolphins

Did you happen to see the article and video of the long distance swimmer in New Zealand who noticed a Great White shark following him?  Soon after a school of dolphins started swimming along with him until the shark took off.  From the video it was clear that the dolphins were swimming along with the man as they were swimming sooo slow.  I never did see the shark, but it's a nice story, so I'll just go with it.  Many posts ago I drew some Great Whites in blue pencil, sooo out came the blue pencil again for a couple of dolphin sketches.

Looking Back

I recently noticed that the drawing below was done in 2004 - - which as you know was 10 years ago.  This of course started me thinking about why I started drawing again and all of the different types of drawings, digital paintings and occasional traditional painting I have done over the past 10 years as well as the years before that.  The first part of my harking is easy enough to answer.  Although I drew a fair amount as a kid, it wasn't until my own kids started to draw with something other than crayons that I started to take a more serious approach.  I can sum up the difference in my artistic approach as an adult with one word - - patience.  I would credit "willingness to erase" as the second most important change to my ability to produce a quality drawing.  A scroll through the past 10 years of art work leaves me with a feeling of improvement/progress, but I continue to be inspired by other artists as I learn and incorporate new ideas into each piece I begin.

Animal Sketches

Here are a few more sketches I did from The Art Of Animal Drawing by Ken Hultgren - - a beautiful book with over 750 illustrations. I highly recommend it for those artists interested in more dynamic animal drawing studies.  This is not a step by step book, nor does it attempt to create photo realistic images, but a book that deals with the construction and structure of animals as they move.
